This year the BA Jewellery exhibition will stay true to the spirit of Central Saint Martins – the work of the 47 graduating students will be unique and remarkable. With pieces varying from one-off haute-jewellery to theatre; from everyday wear items to exquisite ones; from precious metals and stones to plastic, porcelain and moss, this collection presents the students’ responses to a wide range of starting points; insect collectors, Aztec warriors, memories, deteriorating surfaces, bones and shadows. The areas of exploration range from 1940s glamour, medical prosthetics, bartered jewellery and the number 1,000.
Central Saint Martins is a college within the University of the Arts and is recognised world wide for the quality of the education it provides. It has been long known as a cradle for creative talent in all areas. Giles Deacon, Stephen Jones, Hannah Martin, Zoe Arnold call it their alma mater and alumni from CSM BA Jewellery Design have created stores such as Wright and Teague, Dinny Hall, EC One, or design for such eminent jewellery houses as Cartier, Givenchy and Tag Heuer.
The international class of students produce works both within the usual definition of jewellery and at its edges. This is a much anticipated show, and also the last to be held at the original building in Southampton Row before the move to brand new premises at Kings Cross.
Over the years, the show has proven to be an opportunity to discover new talents and to share new visions of jewellery. Do come and see this year’s exciting ideas, the everyday, the theatrical, the sinister and the unpredictable.
